How to Choose the Perfect Exterior Paint Color

How to Choose the Perfect Exterior Paint Color

Choosing the perfect exterior paint color can be challanging. I recently selected exterior paint colors for this barndominium below and I love how it turned out! It’s that time of year for refreshing outdoor projects so I thought you might find this helpful.

Consider the points below when choosing new colors for your exterior paint projects.

Take a look at the surroundings, including other buildings nearby. Step back and take a look at the landscape, as it can greatly influence how a color looks in natural light and how it complements the surroundings. For instance, earth tones blend well with natural settings, while bolder colors might be more suitable if you are looking for a statement color to stand out as the focal point.

Next, think about the architectural style and the age of the building you are selecting colors for. Historical accuracy might be important for some buildings, you can easily research period-appropriate colors. For newer constructions, you have the freedom to choose colors that match the latest trends or your personal preference. POV, personal preference should always override trends. Your style should be focused on your preferences always. In both cases, you need to look at the roof material and color, exposed brick that won’t be painted, decking and porches, as the paint color should harmonize with everything to create a cohesive look.

Lastly, the functionality and maintainance of the color choice should not be overlooked. Darker colors tend to conceal imperfections, dirt and stains better than light colors. All paint colors fade over time but a dark color will be more noticable than lighter. Lighter colors will need to be cleaned more often to maintain the sharp appearance.

Choosing exterior paint colors is a process that should balance the aesthetic appeal along with being managable to maintain. Always test paint samples in different lighting conditions on or around your building before making your final decision. If possible when you are down to two or three choices get an actual sample and paint a portion of your building to see the color on your building. This way, you can ensure the color looks great at all times of the day and in different weather conditions. Natural light is key when selecting colors for exteriors.
