Cowhide Rugs – a must for decorating my home

Cowhide Rugs at Willow Tree and Company

One of the most asked questions I get is about my own home and what style I choose for my home decor. Well.....I am eclectic for sure! I find things I really love and work around those. One of my very favorite things, I invested in years ago, were cowhide area rugs. At the time they were a stretch for me financially but they are still with me 20+ years later. I live on a farm and love animals so carpet is completely out of the question. I love the wood floors with the cowhide rug accents. These are a staple for me. I never tire of these rugs because you can put any style of décor with these beauties. Two of my cowhide rugs are in high traffic areas and hands down they are the most durable option for a rug.

How to care for cowhide rugs

Over the years, I have read many articles on how to care for cowhide rugs and a lot say not to vacuum. Well, I have been vacuuming mine for 20 years. I cannot imagine owning a rug that cannot be vacuumed. My cowhide rugs still have all the hair and look great. They are a dream to keep clean. They are naturally stain resistant. If something spills or gets tracked on the rug I use Dawn dish detergent on a damp rag, rinse and dry with clean rag. If something really stinky gets on it I clean with White Vinegar and dry with clean rag. Making sure you dry completely is the key, I think. You never want to saturate with extra water. The only issue I have ever had with my cowhide rugs is a little curling on the edges in certain areas. I think this come from the sun shining in and shrinking the hide a little. I just take a steam iron and LIGHTLY steam, place something weighty on the area for a day and it goes back flat!

So if I had to pick one thing that I love decorating with that is truly functional it is my cowhide area rugs!

Cowhides come in an array of colors, styles and sizes. These beautiful rugs can be used to compliment traditional, modern, country, bohemian, and rustic style homes. They add so much texture and if you want to cozy up a room throw a cowhide down! They are so versatile, you can use in any room. Cowhides also work great as a wall hanging or as a throw over the back of a sofa.
