Some of the best pieces in a home aren’t store-bought, they’re made with your own two hands. This DIY Lariat Wreath is one of those projects that feels like a little love note to your space. If you're like us and drawn to the stories behind old things, like a weathered rope or a tangle of wild florals, then this wreath is about to be your next favorite craft.
Plus, it’s full of charm, a little unexpected, and the kind of piece that gets people asking, “Where’d you find that?”
Ready to craft one of your own?
Supplies You’ll Need
Gather these supplies, as each one plays an important part:
- An old lariat rope – with character works best; it doesn’t need to be perfect (in fact, the imperfections make it better)
- Thick floral wire – nothing fancy, just strong enough to hold shape
- Wire cutters
- Half-moon grapevine base – we love the raw, natural feel of this. You can grab one on Amazon.
- Greenery and florals – whatever fits your vibe. Think soft eucalyptus, dried sprigs, or blooms in muted, earthy tones.
Step 1: Shape the Lariat
Start by gently coaxing your rope into a circular shape. It won’t be perfect, and it shouldn’t be. You want it to look relaxed and easygoing, like something you stumbled upon in an old barn.
Use the floral wire to hold it in place at four anchor points. The lariat creates your base and gives you that beautiful, slightly unfinished look we love so much in rustic design.
Step 2: Layer in Greenery
Tuck stems of greenery into the lariat. Work in one direction and let the stems layer over each other naturally. The goal here isn’t symmetry, it’s stacked bunches of texture. Use a mix of soft greens and a few wild, wispy stems.
Step 3: Add Florals with Intention
Start with the largest floral pieces to create focal areas. These are your statement flowers.
Next, add medium blooms to soften the shape. Then tuck in small florals where the wreath feels a little sparse. Stand back every so often and rearrange until it feels right.
Step 4: Make It Yours
Now for the fun part. This is where your wreath becomes yours.
Add something that tells your story:
- A bit of ribbon from an old gift
- A tiny horseshoe
- Dried herbs from your kitchen
- A mini charm or trinket
- A velvet tie in your favorite color
These aren’t just accents, they’re the little details that make a house feel like home.
Style It With Soul
Hang your finished wreath on your mantel or greet guests with it on your front door. Wherever it lands, it’ll bring with it that cozy, vintage feel we love so much at Willow Tree and Company.
